British-Made vs Imported Solar Panels: Which Should You Buy?
Updated 15 October 2026 · SEO-DONS LTD
Most “British solar panels” adverts mean panels sold and fitted in Britain. Genuinely British-made products exist, but they are few, and mostly roof-integrated. This guide puts the two side by side so you can decide which suits your home. For the full list of UK manufacturers we could confirm, see British-made solar panels.
What “British-made” covers
A solar panel goes through five stages: polysilicon, ingots and wafers, cells, the module, and installation. The UK firms we confirmed from their own websites work at the module and roof-product stage:
- GB-Sol makes PV Slate, Infinity edge-to-edge solar roofs and integrated panels at its factory on the Treforest Industrial Estate, north of Cardiff.
- Solar Capture Technologies says it designs, assembles and quality-checks modules and a composite solar roof tile in Blyth, Northumberland.
Neither says its solar cells are made in the UK. The government’s Solar Roadmap (30 June 2025) says the UK is unlikely to be able to compete in the existing global market for conventional solar panels.
Side by side
| British-made products | Imported premium panels | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical form | Solar slates, solar roofs, integrated panels | Standard on-roof panels |
| Where made | Module or roof product made or assembled in the UK; cells imported | Usually Asia |
| Looks | Can match a slate or tiled roof | Visible array (all-black options) |
| Best for | Slate roofs, re-roofs, new builds, sensitive settings | Lowest cost per kW on an existing roof |
| Performance | Check the datasheet | Check the datasheet |
| Supply-chain questions | Fewer stages abroad, but ask where the cells come from | Ask about cell and polysilicon traceability |
Performance: the datasheet decides
Where a panel is made says nothing about how it performs. Compare efficiency, temperature coefficient, the output promised at year 25 or 30, and the product warranty. For example, REC’s Alpha Pure-RX datasheet lists up to 22.6% efficiency, −0.24%/°C and 92% output at year 25. Ask for the same figures for any British-made product you are quoted, and compare them per square metre if it is an integrated system. Our best solar panels UK guide shows how to read a datasheet.
Appearance and roof type
This is where British-made products earn their place. A solar slate among natural slates can look close to an ordinary roof; an integrated roof replaces covering you might otherwise be buying. On a standard concrete-tiled roof that isn’t being replaced, an on-roof array of imported panels is usually the better-value way to the same output. See solar roof tiles and slates.
Cost
Integrated products generally cost more per kilowatt than standard panels. The gap narrows if you are re-roofing anyway, because the solar product replaces roof covering. The Energy Saving Trust puts a typical home system at about 4.5 kWp and around £7,600 installed (read 15 October 2026); get quotes for both options on your own roof before deciding.
Supply chain and ethics
The Solar Roadmap estimates that Xinjiang produces between a third and one half of the world’s solar-grade polysilicon. Buying a UK-assembled product shortens the chain but doesn’t remove the question, because the cells are still imported. Whichever you choose, ask where the cells and polysilicon come from. Our supply chains and forced labour guide lists the questions.
How to decide
- Get quotes for a standard system from MCS-certified installers.
- If you have a slate roof, are re-roofing or appearance matters, ask for an integrated or British-made option too.
- Compare datasheets, warranties and price per kWp.
- Check the installer: how to check an MCS installer.
